Distinguished and Famous people from Hindmarsh Island

🧭 Dr John Rankine

Dr John Rankine’s colonial pastoral interests included Hindmarsh Island as well as the Strathalbyn district. Government correspondence records his applications for an occupation licence on the island, while the local heritage survey describes cattle being moved between his mainland and island properties. These movements depended on river crossings and landing places in the Lower Lakes. His connection is a documented farming enterprise on Kumarangk, the Ngarrindjeri island later known as Hindmarsh Island. It belongs to the period when colonial landholding was transforming the region’s use of country.

🎨 Aunty Sandra Saunders

Ngarrindjeri artist Aunty Sandra Saunders documented the Hindmarsh Island bridge controversy through a collection of paintings and mixed-media works presenting the women’s perspective. The collection was exhibited again in the 2026 Kumarangk exhibition, alongside new work and contributions from several generations of Ngarrindjeri women artists. The work preserves a record of resistance and continuing cultural responsibility in a history often told primarily through public arguments about development.
